There’s a prevalent myth circulating in society regarding halitosis, and it’s causing pain and frustration for chronic bad breath sufferers everywhere. The misunderstanding I speak of is that proper oral care is enough to get rid of bad breath, and if you have bad breath, you are an unclean person who does not brush their teeth. If you suffer from truly chronic bad breath, then you probably have a hunch that this is not the case at all. Chalk me up as one of those bad breath sufferers who knows the truth (the hard way).
You’re going to want to pay attention, because my own experiences with overcoming my chronic bad breath have given me a personal insight into the problem that most people do not have.
The funny thing about bad breath is it is a condition that you can sort of “feel” that you have, even though most adults are too kind to tell you just how bad your breath really is. You can still tend to tell that others can sense it too though when you judge their reactions to you. Bad breath is a serious problem that has harsh effects on one’s social life.
The problem is that the dental community does not usually recognize bad breath as a serious problem. We are all told from the time we are kids that if we brush and floss our teeth, then we will not have it. This makes for an even more embarrassing situation, because not only do we suffer from a problem that no one seems to know the actual solution to, people will usually think that it is your own fault that you have bad breath!
Remember what I said about how I have personally suffered from chronic bad breath for years? Well, I’ll be the first to testify that for me, brushing and flossing were a futile way to attack my halitosis. I did my own research, and what I found was the the true cause of bad breath is a certain sulfur producing bacteria that very much enjoys living in your mouth.
The geography and climate in your mouth allows these sulfur producing bacteria to multiply in your mouth at alarming rates, much faster than your toothbrush can deal with them. And to put it mildly, sulfur doesn’t smell too good.
So, you want to know how to cure bad breath if brushing and flossing isn’t enough? The secret is to make your mouth less “friendly” to these odor causing bacteria. You must create a pH balanced, neutral environment where bacteria cannot flourish.
Don’t beat your head against the wall and give up on having fresh breath. Bad breath is entirely possible to cure, but if brushing and flossing isn’t enough for you then it takes a different approach, and a different mindset to succeed.
