GETTING STARTED WITH SALSA DANCING

In spanish “Salsa” means sauce, but to many others, it is a hot fiery style of latin dancing. Typically the music involves complex African percussion rhythms based around the Son clave or Rumba clave. Salsa can be a partner dance or recognized by solo steps. Other forms of Salsa dancing can be in groups of couples, with frequent exchanges of partners also know as “Casino de Rueda”. We will share some important elements of salsa dancing including some basic tips and tricks to take with you on the dance floor.

When salsa dancing, you must have the appropriate footwear. It’s best for men to wear leather soles. I would avoid wearing any open shoes because that could be painful if your partners heel hits your toes. I would recommend women wear solid dance shoes for support. If they are new shoes, make sure you break them in good to avoid your feet from getting blistered. As for clothing, comfortable and light clothes are best to allow free movement. You want to make sure the clothes you wear will allow you to perform those turn patterns and shines without restricting your ability to glide across the dance floor.

Your best bet is to take some classes at a local dance studio - especially if you’re a guy. Sorry, but most of the salsa pressure is on you. Since this is a Latin-based dance, the man is generally expected to make the moves and lead the way. And since spontaneity is such a big part of the salsa experience, you’ll need to create your own footwork within the salsa parameters. You are expected to keep constant tension in your arms as you guide your partner.

Within the confines of following the guy, ladies need to be quick and creative. You must be able to closely watch his movements, feel for his cues and where he wants you to follow. You do not want to be bobbing or bouncing around. Try to keep a straight back posture, minimal tension in your arms and let the rhythm move your hips.

You can definitely hurt your partner during spins if you have a long pony tail or long straight hair. When your spinning that close you have the potential to hit them in the face or giving them a good whack to the body.

Always relax and have fun when you go out salsa dancing. Look at the experienced salsa dancers and pick up a few things that you can add to your own style. Keep practicing your salsa dance moves when you have time and watch yourself get better and better at it.

One more thing to remember, if you plan on dancing salsa all night be prepared to sweat a lot. Carry a small hand towel because it is going to get hot!.
