If you don’t know what to look for, fake gold can be tricky to spot. So, if you’re looking to by gold jewelry such as long earrings, it’s crucial to be able to tell the difference.

From crowns to medallions, and earrings to bracelets, gold has been a highly sought after metal for various jewelry for centuries. Since ancient times up to today, earrings have been a personal favorite for many women throughout the generations. So much unique and detailed craftsmanship has gone into the construction of earrings to catch their eye. Earrings are one of the most commonly purchased articles of jewelry that women buy.

As with all things expensive, fakes soon emerged. There are many women who get cheated with fake gold earrings, as time progresses technology improves and fakes become harder to distinguish. For these reasons it is smart to discover how you can tell the difference between a real gold earring and a fake rip-off.

The quickest and easiest test you can do is bite down on the gold. Gold is a malleable metal and as such it should be possible to quite easily mark the gold with your teeth. More upmarket fakes however will be gold layered, as such the bite test will not work. The bite test can also be fooled by lead, as it is soft like gold. You should be wary of lead as it is poisonous to people if consumed.

Possibly the best way to tell if gold is real is to test it to see if it’s magnetic. Gold is not magnetic at all. If you find it to be attracted to a magnet, you can tell without a doubt it’s a fake.

Those with heightened senses, such as a blind person, can easily tell the difference between real and fake gold. Simply by feeling the earring they can tell the difference through touch. A very smooth and slippery surface, with sharp edges due to bad milling is usually a fake.

The best way to ensure you aren’t getting something phony is to only shop at well known jewelry sources. These places don’t want to tarnish their reputation by selling fake gold. You need to ensure you can return any item you aren’t satisfied with. Stay away from any antique gold earrings since you have no expertise on the subject. You need to consult experts before you decide to buy something labeled as antique gold so you don’t get ripped off.
